Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF)

Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF) was implemented by Australian Government from 01 July 2016. SSVF was introduced to support Australia's education services sector. It will simplify subclasses for visa and bring it down to 2 instead of eight. It is an effort made to create single and simplified immigration risk framework for all international students. The introduction of SSVF will enhance impartiality and provide backing to a surrounding where high quality and low risk providers can flourish.

Why has SVP changed to SSVF?

The SVP was complex with all its subclasses, assessment level framework and visa processing arrangements. According to the Australian Government, “The SSVF has been designed to make the process of applying for a student visa simpler to navigate for genuine students, deliver a more targeted approach to immigration integrity and reduce red tape for business”.

What are the most significant changes in SSVF?

Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)

From 5 November 2011 Genuine Temporary Entrant was introduced for students who wish to study in Australia. A genuine student is a student who intends to obtain a successful educational outcome and has the language, educational and financial background to have a reasonable chance of achieving this educational outcome. Factors considered under to be a genuine applicant for entry and study as a student include: English language proficiency; financial capacity; prerequisite schooling; age requirements; and intention to comply with visa conditions. This requirement indicates an individual’s intention for a temporary stay in Australia. For a student visa to be granted, a student must be a GTE.

Label free visa processing

From 01 October 2012, Australian high commission, New Delhi as a part of the Australian government’s global program has introduced visa label – free travel arrangements across India, Nepal and Bhutan. Applicants will no be required to submit their passport with their visa application. Instead they will be required to submit a notarized copy of each used page of their passport.

On visa grant, the visa holder will be issued with a visa grant letter that will explain the conditions of the visa including period of validity and entry requirements. The visa grant letter is not necessary to facilitate travel but it is strongly recommended to carry their visa grant letter with them when traveling as it will provide them with easy to understand information about the conditions of the visa, information which was not always easy to find on Australian visa labels.
